The Peoples Democratic Party’s (PDP) Simon Mwadkwon was elected Senate Minority Leader in the Plateau North senatorial election, but the Court of Appeal in FCT has declared that result invalid.
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) was mandated to hold a new election within 90 days by the Tribunal.
In his decision, Justice E. Daudu stated that the PDP had not fully complied with the High Court judgment because 12 local government districts had not sent delegates to the party conference.
Chris Giwa, a candidate for the All Progressives Congress (APC), and Gyang Zi, a candidate for the Labour Party (LP), both appealed the court’s decision.
Giwa and Zi had filed an appeal in opposition to the decision of the National/State Election Petitions Tribunal in Jos, Plateau State, which had previously recognized Mwadkwon of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) as the legitimate senate election winner.
They said that because the PDP lacked organization, Mwadkwon was ineligible to run for office.
